Emmaus softball rolls past Chicks, Vikettes
The Emmaus High School softball team bounced back from its first loss of the season with a pair of wins last week.
After falling to Whitehall by a run, 8-7, on Monday, April 21, the Hornets answered with mercy-rule victories in East Penn Conference play at Central Catholic last Wednesday and then home against Allen on Friday.
Emmaus defeated the Vikettes 15-1 in six innings at Pates Park and then took down the Canaries 20-0 in three innings.
In the win over Central, Emmaus scored two runs in both the top of the first and third innings then posted 11 runs in the fourth-through-six innings to end the contest early.
Amanda King finished with six RBIs to go along with three hits. Mari Eiswerth earned the victory by throwing all six innings and allowing just two hits while striking out 12 batters. She also went 3-for-3 at the plate with a triple and two RBI.
Sadie Haefeli drove in three runs with a double and Morgan Schwab and Sophia Tranguch both added a pair of hits for the Hornets. Taylor Hauver had a hit and scored three runs.
In the victory against Allen, Emmaus scored 13 runs in the first and added seven more in the second as they were able to leave their home field after just three innings. The Hornets finished with 17 hits, while King didn’t allow a hit inside the circle, striking out five batters. Haefeli, Avery Shank and Abigail Derr all finished with two hits to lead the way with Shank adding four RBIs, Haefeli contributing three RBIs and Derr two RBIs. Tranguch tallied a hit and three RBIs and both King and Brianna Gitski had a hit and two RBIs.
In the loss to Whitehall, Emmaus held a 5-0 lead after the top of the second inning and led 7-2 heading into the bottom of the seventh when the Zephyrs posted six runs.
Eisworth pitched 6 2/3 innings and allowed eight hits but only two earned runs as the Hornets committed three errors in the game that resulted in six unearned runs. Eisworth struck out 10 Whitehall batters in the loss.
Hauver went 2-for-3 and scored three times in the game. Derr also went 2-for-3 while scoring driving in a pair of runs. Sophia Tranguch went 2-for-4 against Whitehall.
Emmaus, which improved to 14-3 overall and 11-2 in the conference, played Dieruff Tuesday and faces Whitehall again Thursday. The regular season finale at Parkland is set for Monday afternoon.
With the EPC playoffs starting in just over a week, Emmaus entered this week a half-game ahead of Whitehall with teth second-best record in the league.
The Hornets hold first place in the Lehigh Division with three games remaining in the season and will likely host a first-round playoff game.
