Diehl, Freeman reach milestones in wins
The hits – and wins – just keep on coming for the Northwestern Lehigh softball team.
Over the past week, the Tigers have outscored opponents 58-4 in four games. With those types of margins, Northwestern Lehigh is in good shape as the regular season wraps up this week.
The Tigers downed Lehighton in two separate games this past week with a 10-0 win at Lehighton and a 17-0 win on their home field.
In the first game, Abby Dunstan had two doubles and a triple to drive in two runs and score three times for Northwestern. Rylee McGinley had three hits and scored twice out of the leadoff spot and Shelby Mitman drove in three runs with a pair of doubles. Ainsley Behler had a single and triple for Northwestern and also reached base on a walk.
Emma Freeman allowed just one hit and no walks while striking out 15 in the complete game shutout. Freeman allowed one hit and two walks, while striking out five over three scoreless innings in the second game against Lehighton.
Dunstan, who now has eight home runs this season, hit a grand slam in the first inning to kick start the Tigers offense. Northwestern put up 10 runs in the opening inning and then scored seven more times on six hits in the second inning. Behler had a double and a triple, scoring two runs for the Tigers, Sam Boyer and Natalie Conner also had triples with Conner scoring three times in the game.
Dunstan and Shelby Mitman both homered in a 6-2 win over Northern Lehigh.
On Tuesday, Northwestern downed Catasauqua 25-2, getting 11 runs in the top of the first and then putting up 10 in the top of the third as the Lady Tigers collected 19 hits in the game and took advantage of nine Catasauqua errors to score 15 unearned runs.
Anna Seyler had two hits and drove in four runs for the Tigers and Adalyn Reichard collected two doubles, drove in two runs and scored three times. Lexi Zentz, Ella Bressi, and Emily Diehl also collected two hits each.
Emily Diehl threw all three innings for Northwestern Lehigh, allowing two hits and one walk.
A pair of players recently reached milestones with Dunstan collecting the 100th hit of her high school career and Freeman recording her 400th strikeout as a pitcher for the Lady Tigers.
Northwestern (15-0 Colonial, 17-1 overall) has wrapped up the West Division and the top seed for the Colonial League playoffs and is in position to secure the top seed in the District 11 4A playoffs as well.
There are just two games remaining in the regular season with a game at Jim Thorpe (0-13, 2-13) and the regular season finale at home Thursday against Palmerton (9-6, 9-7).
