Baseball team looks to regroup
Ending the regular season with a pair of losses is not how teams want to go into the postseason.
The Northwestern baseball team will look to regroup before the Colonial League playoffs. As things stand now, the Tigers could be seeded anywhere from first to third and that will be determined by the teams who still have remaining games to play.
If Catasauqua (1-15 Colonial) finds some way to knock off Southern Lehigh (14-3) then the Tigers (14-4) would be the top seed by virtue of their win over the Spartans during the regular season.
Northwestern would lose its current second seed spot if Saucon Valley (13-4) defeats Palisades (7-10), the Panthers would take the two spot thanks to their win over Northwestern during the regular season.
In the 5-4 loss to Palmerton that ended the regular season, the Tigers took a first-inning lead thanks to a Blue Bombers error that led to a run for Northwestern.
Palmerton tied the game in the third inning and then scored four runs in the fourth to take a 5-1 lead.
Not a team to shrink from fighting from behind, Northwestern put up three runs in the bottom of the seventh and had runners on second and third when the final out was made.
In the seventh, a single, walk, and a hit by pitch loaded the bases with one out for Cannon Fitch, who picked up his second hit of the day and made it a 5-2 game.
Pitching carefully to Cole Dynda, Palmerton pitcher Cameron Pengelly issued a walk to force across another run before a sacrifice fly from Watson Church made it 5-4 with two outs. A.J. Borger came on to get the final out on a strikeout and recorded the save for Palmerton.
The high-powered offense that averaged 10 runs per game in their first 17 games scored just 10 in its last three games combined, contributing to the slow finish.
In their final three games, the Tigers hit just .226 (17-for-76) after averaging .324 (132-for-407) coming into those games.
