Man dies in tree removal accident WEIWeisenberg Twp

A 36-year-old West Penn Township man died after he was struck in the head by a tree log around 8:50 a.m. May 21 in the 3700 block of Spring Road, Weisenberg Township.

According to Lehigh County Coroner Daniel A. Buglio, Steven M. Gill, was pronounced dead at 9:49 a.m. May 21 in the Emergency Department at Lehigh Valley Hospital, Salisbury Township.

An autopsy was completed May 22 at the Lehigh County Coroner’s Office and Forensics Center, Buglio stated.

Buglio said the cause of Gill’s death is blunt force injuries and he ruled his death an accident.

According to a State Police press release, Troopers were dispatched around 8:56 a.m. to the Spring Road location for the report of an accident involving a worker and an excavator.

Police say upon arrival at the scene, Troopers determined the individual was operating an excavator on the property, utilizing it to pick up and remove fallen trees.

While operating the excavator, it rotated with a tree in the machine and struck Gill.

This incident is being investigated by PSP Fogelsville Criminal Investigation Unit, police say.
