Firefighters update status

Members of the Macungie Volunteer Fire Department attended the May 5 Macungie Borough Council meeting with updates to the status of the department.

Various members of the committee spoke about areas of interest, including paying down the debt and control of various duties by council including appointment of officers.

Several members spoke including Dennis Fritz who is the vice president of the Macungie Volunteer Fire Department and was previously a fire chief.

Tim Romig, president of the Macungie Volunteer Fire Department, also spoke. Accomplishments were mentioned such as the sale of excess trucks and a transparent budget. There are 14 new firefighters and eight administrators. The station has been cleaned and organized and conducts regularly scheduled meetings. Upcoming events include an open house May 26, a movie night July 12 and a flea market Sept. 13. More details are available on the department’s Facebook page.

Representatives from Friends for Macungie Institute spoke about the flea market scheduled May 10 in Macungie Memorial Park. They are seeking volunteers for the event.

Lehigh County Executive Phillips Armstrong attended the council meeting saying farewell as he leaves his office. He talked about the police radios that will be replaced.

Council member Barry Bloch resigned effective May 1. The resignation was accepted with regret. Council has 30 days to appoint a new member who will be in this position until Jan. 1, 2026.

Authorization was given to sell the 2003 F550 truck through Municibid, an online government auction. There were 46 bidders with the high bid being $7,050.

A sidewalk was discussed in the area of Brookside Country Club. There is sidewalk in the area but there is a portion not connected. This will be discussed further.

It was announced there was a water issue on Locust Street due to a leak at the fire hydrant. Water was shut off in the area for a couple of hours.

An executive session was held concerning legal matters and personnel issues.
