Trojans top Tigers in third OT
The Parkland High School boys lacrosse team won two of its three games last week, including one in the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference.
The Trojans defeated Northampton 16-2 last Tuesday night in a conference matchup and then took down nonleague opponent Northwestern Lehigh 8-7 in three overtimes two nights later before falling to Wilson West Lawn 16-5 on Saturday afternoon in another nonconference game.
Parkland is 9-2 overall and 3-1 in the conference.
“The season is off to a good start, but plenty of room for improvement,” said interim head coach Cory Andrews, who took over the team after Vince Arezzi stepped down. “We encountered a tough loss to Easton, but we were able to bounce back with a few wins. Practices have been competitive and all the players are working hard to learn and improve.”
In the win over the Kids, the Trojans used a strong first half where they scored six goals in each quarter to take a 12-2 lead at halftime and then shut them out the rest of the way.
Parker Kusko finished with a game-high five goals and had an assist, while John Gerancher recorded four goals and three assists.
Blake Finnegan and Bailey Wetmore tallied two goals and an assist, while Colton Arezzi and Breckin Serratore contributed a goal and an assist and Brennan Shaner had a goal to round out the scoring. Matt Kelley dished out an assist.
Max Esteban won 18 faceoffs. Both Andrew Matulevicius and Owen Fehnel finished with four saves in net.
In the victory over the Tigers, each team found the back of the net once in the opening quarter and Parkland added one in the second to take a 2-1 lead at halftime. The two teams each tallied three goals in the third and then Northwestern outscored the Trojans 3-2 to force overtime. After two scoreless overtime periods, Gerancher ended things for his team with the game-winner. It was his second goal of the contest.
Kusko, Finnegan, Kelley, Esteban, Arezzi and Mazz Afif all had one goal with Arezzi contributing an assist. Danny Tapia added an assist. Matulevicius made seven saves for the win.
Wilson got out to an early lead and never looked back, scoring the game’s first seven goals to lead 7-0 after one and 9-2 at halftime. Kusko recorded two goals and an assist.
Finnegan, Wetmore and Kelley all had a goal and both Gerancher and Arezzi added an assist. Esteban won 11 faceoffs and Matulevicius made 14 saves.
