PHS boys lax beats Pates, PC
The Parkland High School boys lacrosse team started April strong with an Eastern Pennsylvania Conference victory before suffering its first setback of the season two days later and then responding to that with a win.
The Trojans defeated Freedom 12-6 on the road last Tuesday, April 1, then lost to Easton 14-11 on Thursday before defeating William Penn Charter 14-5 Saturday in a nonconference game.
In the win over the Patriots, the score was tied 3-3 after the opening quarter, but Parkland outscored Freedom 7-1 in the next two quarters to take over the game. Parker Kusko finished with five goals and an assist to lead the attack.
Colton Arezzi recorded two goals and two assists and both Blake Finnegan and Matt Kelley scored two goals. Matt Scott rounded out the scoring with a goal. John Gerancher contributed three assists and Bailey Wetmore added two assists.
Easton took control of the game with a strong first half as the Red Rovers outscored the Trojans 7-3 in the first quarter and 5-4 in the second to lead 12-7 at halftime. The teams combined for just six goals in the second half. Arezzi finished with four goals and two assists. Kusko had a hat trick.
Finnegan notched two goals and three assists and Danny Tapia added one goal with Wetmore contributing an assist. Max Esteban won 21 faceoffs and Andrew Matulevicius finished with 13 saves in net.
In the victory against William Penn Charter, Parkland opened by outscoring them 5-1 in the first quarter and went up 9-4 at halftime and was able to ease its way to the win. Kusko tallied five goals and an assist and Gerancher recorded three goals.
Both Arezzi and Wetmore had two goals and two assists. Tapia notched one goal and two assists and Kelley added one goal. Esteban totaled 12 wins and Owen Radio had one. Matulevicius ended with eight saves.
Parkland improved to 6-1 overall and 1-1 in the conference. The Trojans were at Northampton on Tuesday and host Northwestern Thursday night on Mentor night before traveling to take on Wilson West Lawn Saturday.
