Northwestern baseball bounces back from loss
Cold and windy weather postponed one game for the Northwestern Lehigh baseball team, leaving the Tigers with just one game over the past week. They made the most of that game as they bounced back from their first loss of the season to beat Palmerton 13-4.
Three players had multi-hit games against the Blue Bombers as seniors Josh Farber, Watson Church and Aidan Freeman all collected two hits and drove in two runs in the win. Cannon Fitch drove in two runs as well. Northwestern collected 10 hits in the game, all of which were singles as it made the most of two Palmerton errors and showed discipline at the plate with 12 walks against two pitchers.
On the mound, Cole Dynda got the start and struck out 12 batters in six shutout innings for the Tigers.
In eight games, Northwestern has walked 51 times while striking out just 35 times this season. Among players with at least 25 plate appearances, the Tigers have six players hitting .333 or over this season. Sophomore Cole Dynda is batting .520 while Church is batting .500 in the early going. Those two are followed by Fitch (.391), Eli Zimmerman (.364), Nolan Fitzgerald (.348) and Jake Carson (.333). As a team, Northwestern is batting .382 and averaging 11 runs per game.
The pitching staff has a combined ERA of 2.38 and have issued just 28 walks to go with 53 strikeouts. Dynda’s outing against the Blue Bombers lowered his season ERA to 0.50 in three outings this season. Among pitchers with at least eight innings pitched, senior Josh Farber has a 1.56 ERA and freshman Jesse Neupauer has a 3.50 ERA in three appearances.
One area that the Tigers are looking to improve is their defensive play. In their eight games, the team has committed 19 errors, sinking their fielding percentage to .913. Of the 34 runs Northwestern has allowed, half of them are unearned.
While Northwestern (6-1 Colonial, 7-1 overall) had just two games over the past week, they have four games in the next week. Wilson (4-4, 4-4) comes to town on Thursday before the Tigers travel to Pen Argyl (3-3-1, 3-3-1) on Friday.
Next week opens at home against Salisbury (6-1, 7-1) before another road game at Palisades (3-3, 4-3).
