Falcons shut out Knights
Salisbury’s pitching staff was a key story for the team last season and that will likely be the story again in 2025.
The Falcons opened their season with a pair of wins, including a shutout win over league foe Pen Argyl to start things on the right foot.
The early returns show that the offense could be better than expected, as well.
Senior Austin Spisszak, who will be the top man on this year’s squad, threw five shutout innings against the Green Knights and struck out eight batters, while allowing just two hits in the 7-0 season-opening win.
Dom Gracia came on to finish the game with a pair of perfect innings for Salisbury.
Spisszak and Michael Stauffer both drove in three runs and combined for five hits in the win. Caleb Gonzalez and Nate Nunez both scored twice in the game. Falcons hitters showed patience at the plate and drew nine walks.
In a nonleague game, Salisbury defeated Dieruff 14-5 to move to 2-0 on the season. This time around, Owen Fogel got the start and threw four innings, giving up one hit and three walks while striking out eight batters. Gracia came on to cover the final three innings.
Senior Tyler Kuder drove in three runs and Spisszak drove in two while both Garrett Leiner and Markus Jones scored three times in the game.
While the defense was flawless against Pen Argyl, Salisbury committed five errors, but it should be noted that the field at Dieruff has been known to lead to a high number of errors. All of the runs allowed by Fogel and Gracia against the Huskies were unearned.
Over the first two games, the pitching Falcon staff has yet to allow an earned run and has allowed six hits and nine walks in 14 innings, with 20 strikeouts to its credit.
Spisszak went 4-8 in the first two games to hit .500 with a team-leading four RBI. As a team, Salisbury has swiped 18 bases without having a runner thrown out. Gonzalez leads with seven stolen bases as the team’s leadoff hitter and Leiner has four steals to his credit.
The Falcons have all Colonial League opponents on the schedule for the next week as they host Palisades, Lehighton, and Northern Lehigh and have a road game at Jim Thorpe mixed in.
