Lloyd wins EPC gold in javelin
Whitehall High School’s track and field team competed at the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference Track and Field Championships on May 7 and 8 at Whitehall where the Zephyrs earned five medals.
Zephyr thrower Tommy Lloyd reached the top of the podium stand with his first-place finish in the javelin throw.
“It’s awesome. It’s a blast,” he said.
Lloyd’s gold-medal throw was a 191-00.
“The season was great for half of the season and then I started having pain in my elbow, so I’ve been taking a rest, and today it felt good to throw,” Lloyd said. “My coaches helped me work on my blocks, and then they said I have to get stronger in the weight room, so I’ve been hitting the weight room.”
Kayden Weaver won the silver medal in shot put with a throw of 49-06.50.
Tessa Hopkins won the bronze medal in pole vault with a jump of 10-00.00, and Ian Thomas won bronze in high jump with a jump of 6-03.00.
“The medal is nice, but I wish I could’ve performed a little bit better because 6-03.00 isn’t even close to my [personal record], and it’s hard to find healthy days with my shin, but today I felt really good, so to do mediocre like that, I’m a little bummed,” Thomas said.
Thomas’s best jump is a 6-06.75, which he reached at Whitehall’s meet against Nazareth this season.
“Body control and speed’s been a problem this year for me, but with my shin feeling good and my speed feeling good on my last jump for 6-05.00 that I didn’t get...I gotta lock in for this next week and perfect my craft for districts. I gotta show up,” he said.
Edriene Lee won a fourth-place medal in the 100 meter dash with a time of 12.56.
The Zephyrs will compete in the District XI Class 3A Track and Field Championships this week at Blue Mountain High School.
