Hailey, Hamaad Jenkins hope to peak at right time this track season

With her season winding down, Hailey Jenkins hopes her season is peaking at the right time.

In a recent meet, Jenkins was first in the 100 (12.76) and second in the 200 (26.30) at Whitehall Zephyr Invitational. She has been among the top three in each category throughout the season.

Speed, though, has been a major factor in the Jenkins family. Her brother, Hamaad, also has excelled in sprints for the Rough Riders.

“The season is actually going great,” said Hailey, who also has been a member of the team’s relay teams. “I have been running consistent times in all of my events.”

Hailey is looking forward to the upcoming league and district meets. She finished first in the 100 at leagues and was second at districts last season. Earlier this season, she broke the school record in the 200.

“I’m still waiting for a PR (personal record) in my 100. I’m looking forward to leagues and districts.”

Unlike her sister, Hamaad hasn’t enjoyed the same stream of success. He knows that it has been a roller coaster-type season.

“My season has been having its ups and downs,“ said Hamaad. “Some meets I have been running my best and others I haven’t. But that shows there’s always room for improvement.

“In one meet, I peaked and ran a 10.9 (in the 100), but they rounded it off to 11, and that time all my running mechanics were at their best.”

Hamaad also is anticipating the postseason, and he knows what is necessary to improve.

“The one part I have to work on is running on my toes more and getting my knees up,” added Hamaad. “I feel that can make me more explosive and faster. Finally, this year at leagues and districts I cam coming for it all, so it should be fun to watch.”

Head coach Kyle Rusnock has been grateful for their contributions.

“The Jenkins are phenomenal athletes,” gushed Rusnock. “They are a coach’s dream. So far this season, they have had very good numbers in the 100 and 200. Hailey’s best 100 this year was 11.9 and Hamaad’s is an 11. They both run a great 200 as well.

“Hamaad’s times are coming down, and he is ready to do damage in the postseason.”
