Girls still hope for deep run

For the Whitehall softball team, it is a week of soul-searching.

After a 15-4 loss to Parkland at Patriots’ Park Saturday, the Zephyrs dipped to 9-8 overall. In the final stretch run, head coach Jeff Vivian believes his team will discover an identity to possibly make another run to the district championship game.

“Saturday didn’t go as planned,” offered Vivian. “We weren’t happy with the effort and energy in that game. I thought the opponent, the venue, and the game became a little bit too big for us.”

“But this week, we have to find out who we are.”

The Zephyrs met William Allen Wednesday, and then had two crucial showdowns with Northampton (Thursday) and Emmaus (Monday) to help determine their postseason, mainly in district play.

“We have a chance to finalize seeding for districts, and we have Northampton at the end of the week,” stressed Vivian. “That’s a rivalry game, that’s bedlam, the battle of the bridge part 2. That’s a game we always look forward to, so it’s a chance for us to play in a raised stakes game and solidify who we are as a team.”

Vivian also is confident the returns of Arianna Donlon and Hannah Bundra will solidify the team.

Among the team batting leaders are Kate Yadush, who is hitting .596 with 14 RBIs; Aubrey Steiner .565 with 11 RBIs; Josephine Schultz .474 with 10 RBIs; and Nya Brown .435 with 13 RBIs; and Sienna Meli .357 with 14 RBIs.

Vivian sees it all coming together.

“We suffered through injuries this year and now are starting to get people back and healthy,” added Vivian. “The return of Arianna Donlon and Hanna Bundra will help with some of the depth issues we have.

“We have a really good opportunity to close this year out strong and be in stride heading into districts.”
