Hornets win first eight matches

The Emmaus High School boys volleyball team had a pair of Eastern Pennsylvania Conference matches last week and they came out on the winning end of both matches, defeating Nazareth in straight sets last Tuesday night inside Emmaus’ gym, and then beat Northampton in four sets last Thursday night on the road.

Emmaus beat the Blue Eagles by scores of 25-16, 25-20 and 25-22.

The Hornets led from start to finish in the opening set and were never really challenged, but the second and third sets were a little more challenging as they held on in the end to take both and finish the sweep.

In the win over the Kids, Emmaus had an easy go of the first set and won the second set in similar fashion, but faced adversity for the first time after dropping set three.

The Hornets bounced back, however, and won the fourth set to take the match, winning by scores of 25-12, 25-19, 21-25 and 25-15.

Cooper Henseler finished with 40 assists and four aces. Cael Kratzer tallied seven kills and had a .600 hit percentage. Ben Skekel and Jametric Harris both recorded 10 kills. Jude Boyle contributed 14 digs in the win.

The Hornets also beat Pocono Mountain West on Wednesday, April 3 and competed in the Bobcat Invitational at Northeastern High School during the first weekend of this month.

The Hornets defeated Pocono Mountain West in straight sets by scores of 25-14, 25-16 and 25-7. They were never really threatened in either of the sets to remain unbeaten overall early on in the year.

Three days later, Emmaus competed in the Bobcat Invitational, bright and early with the first match at 8:30 a.m., and had a successful day, winning every match to qualify for the final.

The Hornets fell to Shaler in the championship match to earn second place overall.

Emmaus actually opened the day with its first match against Shaler in a tough, hard-fought match.

But the Hornets quickly bounced back in their pool play and won fairly easily against Red Land, York Suburban and Upper Dublin. In the next match, a crossover match, they beat Cochranton to enter into the gold bracket.

In the playoff bracket, Emmaus got the better of Warwick, Red Lion and Lower Dauphin, before meeting Shaler again for the second time in the final.

Emmaus is now 8-0 overall and 6-0 in EPC play.
