The Salisbury High School baseball team just wrapped up a stretch of playing six games in nine days and the added workload did nothing to slow the Falcons down with Salisbury going 6-0 over the stretch, outscoring opponents 47-22 during that span of games.

Salisbury (10-0 Colonial, 12-1 overall) beat Bangor and Notre Dame – Green Pond to open the stretch of games and then downed Palisades 3-2 in eight innings.

In the win over the Pirates, Jacob Bucchin went 3-for-4 with three doubles and an RBI to lead the Falcons offensive attack.

With the game tied 2-2, Bucchin led off the top of the eighth with a double and was thrown out trying to stretch it into a triple. Austin Spisszak followed with a line drive single to left and one out later, Jake Zellin tripled to drive in what would be the winning run for the Falcons.

Thomas Lovelidge started the game and threw six strong innings, giving up two runs – one earned – and striking out six batters while throwing 98 pitches. Spisszak took to the mound to pitch the eighth and didn’t allow a ball out of the infield to record the save for Salisbury.

Spisszak came up big again in a win against Saucon Valley (5-4, 5-5) when he struck out nine batters over 4 1/3 innings of relief work against the Panthers, not allowing a hit and walking just one batter. At the plate Spisszak was 2-for-4 with three RBI in the 8-1 win.

Salisbury got on the board with a six-run bottom of the second. One out singles by Owen Fogel and Michael Stauffer were followed by Zellin being hit by a pitch to load the bases. Andrew Grejda walked to force in a run and an error on a groundball hit by Dominic Gracia plated two more runs to make it 3-0.

Another error reloaded the bases and Lovelidge picked up an RBI on a line drive single to left and a fielder’s choice would make it 5-0 before Lovelidge scored on a single by Spisszak.

Two more runs scored in the bottom of the sixth when Spisszak singled to bring in Lovelidge and Bucchin to make it 8-1. Lovelidge had worked a one-out walk and Bucchin doubled to put both runners in scoring position for Spisszak.

Stauffer led Salisbury with three hits and Fogel had three RBI in a 9-5 win over William Allen (5-9) in a nonleague game that had been postponed by rain earlier in the season. Nate Nunez also picked up two hits and two RBI in the win and Grejda provided three perfect innings of relief for the Falcons.

The long stretch of games ended with another extra inning win – the third in eight days – when Stauffer singled home the winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning to beat Palmerton 8-7 in eight innings.

Salisbury trailed 3-1 in the bottom of the fifth but left the inning with a 5-3 lead on an RBI single from Fogel, an RBI walk by Stauffer and a two-run double by Zellin. Palmerton (3-7, 4-10) came right back with three runs in the top of the sixth and took a 7-6 lead.

In the bottom of the seventh, Fogel singled and scored when Stauffer reached on an error that allowed Fogel to circle the bases and left Stauffer on second base. A hit batter put another runner on base and a sacrifice bunt by Grejda moved the runners to second and third for Markus Jones, who singled up the middle to tie the game at seven before Palmerton worked out of the jam only to lose the game in the eighth on Stauffer’s heroics.

The Falcons play Friday against Catasauqua (2-8. 2-10) at Limeport in a senior night game, host Dieruff (2-10) in another non-league game Saturday and then have a showdown with Northwestern Lehigh (9-1, 11-3) on Monday in a game that will likely affect the seeding for the Colonial League and District 11 3A playoffs.

The Falcons handed Northwestern its only league loss of the season in a 3-1 game back in March. Salisbury then faces Southern Lehigh (6-3, 7-4) on Tuesday in another key league contest.
