Debate continues on funding volunteer fire companies

A moment of silence in recognition of longtime township resident and former supervisor Henry Kradjel was held at the start of the Upper Milford Supervisors’ April 18 meeting.

An Army veteran, Kradjel gave back to his community, serving many roles in Upper Milford, including 44 years as a comprehensive plan committee member.

Kradjel also owned and operated Kradjel’s Market for 30 years.

Richard Brooks, of Kay Builders, was joined by Anthony Giovannini Jr. and Alan Fornwalt from Keystone Consulting Engineers to address any concerns and questions pertaining to revisions to plans with the Twin Run Development.

On the advice of Township Planning Coordinator Brian Miller, who confirmed concerns on the project were met to his satisfaction, the supervisors gave approval for the Twin Run Development to proceed.

For nearly an hour, supervisors discussed how best to move forward and fund both township fire companies.

In the end, the decision will come down to fund them either from the general fund or introduce a fire tax.

Emotions ran high at one point with residents who demanded more transparency and their voices be heard, as per the Sunshine Act.

Supervisor Dan Mohr continued to voice concern about a fire tax which would negatively impact donations.

Western District Fire Company Chief Michael Kline raised concerns about whether individuals who volunteer their services to a fire station would be taxed.

Upper Milford Township Manager Bud Carter explained only those who own real estate would be taxed. He agreed in many ways, it may not be worth it.

Former Citizens Fire Company of Upper Milford Township Chief Joe Sherman agreed it would not be worth it for someone who owns real estate to volunteer with either fire company.
