Moore to discuss open spaces

At the April 2 Moore Township Board of Supervisors meeting, it was announced a public meeting is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. May 1 regarding the township comprehensive park, recreation and open space plan. The meeting will be at Klecknersville Rangers Volunteer Fire Company, 2718 Mountain View Drive.

Residents are invited to come learn about what is in the works for Moore Township’s parks, trails and open spaces. They are encouraged to share their thoughts on the proposed next steps. Township Manager Stephen Nowroski said he hopes residents attend the meeting so their thoughts can be incorporated into the comprehensive outdoors plan.

The funding for the comprehensive plan is provided by the Northampton County Livable Landscapes Grant program, which provides grant opportunities in land conservation, ecological restoration, park rehabilitation and development and regional trails in Northampton County.

In other business, the board administered the oath of office to a fire police officer.

Additionally, a new emergency management coordinator was named. Robert “Mike” Hindley expects to assume the role after taking the oath of office.

Supervisors approved the promotions of two public works employees. Spencer Tacker and David Flick were promoted from their current roles as municipal workers for the township to the position of equipment operators at a rate of $27.36 per hour.

In other public works department updates, it was reported the new paver arrived. It is a joint ownership arrangement with East Allen Township. The paver was purchased with funds from a Pennsylvania Local Share Account grant.

The Local Share Account funds are derived from gaming activities in the state under the authority of the Pennsylvania Race Horse and Gaming Act 71.

In the recreation commission report, it was noted there is a Girl Scout project to develop a butterfly garden at one of the parks. The location needs to be identified and then approved by the recreation commission.

Sandra Williams-Eckhart was appointed to the township historical commission. The commission is regrouping with a focus on the status of the renovations of the Edelman School and will develop a plan that will focus on the completion of the school renovation.

The Edelman School is one-room schoolhouse that closed in 1958 when the current Moore Elementary School was built. It was never re-purposed and is the last one-room schoolhouse in Moore Township. The school is on the designated list of the National Historic Register.

In the land and environmental protection board report, it was mentioned another 25 acres of open space are planned to be preserved.

Township Solicitor David Backenstoe noted he is working on a document management ordinance that may be ready in the near future.

He also noted he is reviewing the Pennsylvania proposed zoning changes promoted by Gov. Josh Shapiro to assess the impact on Moore Township’s zoning law.

The next Moore Township Board of Supervisors meeting is set for 6 p.m. May 7 in the municipal building, 2491 Community Drive.
