Council discusses Community Night

At the April 3 Hanover Township, Lehigh County, Council meeting, councilmembers walked into a busy, 12-item new business agenda.

Council granted approval for efforts to pursue animal rides, a petting zoo and food trucks at the upcoming annual Community Night, scheduled for Aug. 27, with a planned rain date of Aug. 28, at Canal Park.

Township Manager Melissa Wehr noted the Community Night has been growing in popularity and attendance every year.

Grant Heimbecker, executive director of Community Partners 4 Kids, addressed council, advocating support for council’s approval to have the child ID program at Community Night. The request was approved.

In other business, Wehr received authorization from council to contribute $250 to the ARC for the Step Forward celebration. The ARC mission is to promote and protect the human rights of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities and actively support their full inclusion and participation in the community throughout their lifetimes.

Council also approved Community Partners 4 Kids to have games of chance at Canal Park May 4.

Resolution 2024-38 was passed, granting preliminary final land development to Provident Group-Lehigh Valley Properties LLC, 333 Airport Road, Allentown. Provident is planning a Courtyard Marriot Hotel on about 5 acres of land on the airport’s property.

Council also authorized Wehr to advertise the bidding for the 2024 township road program and to advertise for bids for the Marcon Boulevard sewer project. The three roads addressed in the road plan are at a cost around $1,300,000. The sewer project cost estimate is around $700,000.

Wehr received approval to advertise for a bid for a D & L Trail design professional. The first step in the grant-funded project is to design the plan. The second step is to begin the work to develop the plan.

Bill 2024-01 was introduced that will culminate in an ordinance amending Chapter 18-201 of the statuary code of Hanover Township to prohibit connecting more than one primary commercial property to a single sewer connection.

Bill 2024-03 was introduced amending Chapter 26 of the statutory code to prohibit connecting more than one primary commercial building on a property to a single water connection.

Resolution 2024-39 was approved to designate an area of compliance in accordance with section 104.3.2 of the township’s construction code.

Council approved Resolution 2024-40 that designates May 2 as Pennsylvania State Police Day in Hanover Township, Lehigh County.

Wehr noted street sweeping in the township has begun, and a new public works employee started working recently. Wehr also informed council the township newsletter for spring should be out in a few weeks.

Additionally, Wehr announced the summer outdoor movie program will begin May 31, with movies set for June 28 and July 26. More details about the movies will be posted on the township website.
