LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

Trojan softball wins three straight games

Weather has been causing havoc to many spring sports teams, especially baseball and softball teams.

The Parkland High School softball team is no different. Before last weekend, the Trojans had played just two games since the start of the 2024 regular season, winning two Eastern Pennsylvania Conference games over Allen and Whitehall.

Since that point, Parkland has had four games postponed and another one canceled.

The weather has finally started to cooperate and allowed the Trojans to get in some more games and they kept their win streak going with a nonconference win over Abington Heights at home last Saturday afternoon and then took down East Stroudsburg South on the road Monday evening, followed by an 11-1 win over Dieruff, also in conference action.

Against the Comets, the Trojans went down 4-0 after two innings and found themselves behind 9-0 in the bottom of the fourth, before they finally got on the scoreboard with a four-run inning, the only runs of the game as they fell 11-4.

Parkland finished with nine hits, two of which came from Allison Hunsberger and Amelia Dawson, with Hunsberger adding an RBI. Anna Belletieri and Ami Patel both had a hit and an RBI.

In the win over the Cavaliers, there was a scoreless first inning, but then Parkland got going and poured it on, scoring two runs in both the second and third innings and then three in each of the third and fourth innings.

Parkland belted 11 hits in the game, led by two each from Hunsberger and Addison Fritzinger, with the latter also recording two RBIs. Scerena Reed had a three-run home run and Emma Kushner added a two-run long ball.

Hunsberger started inside the circle and threw all five innings, allowing just four hits while striking out five to earn the win.

Against the Huskies, the two teams were tied after the first inning as they both scored a run in that opening frame. After two scoreless innings, the Trojans finally started to get it going at the plate, recording four runs in both the fourth and fifth innings and then adding another two in the sixth.

Parkland had 14 hits, with three coming from Kushner. Hunsberger, Maria Moore and Molley Heckenberger all finished with two hits and two RBIs. Dawson recorded two hits and one RBI and Reed contributed one hit and two RBIs.

Fritzinger earned the victory inside the circle, throwing a complete game, giving up just two hits and striking out eight batters.

Parkland, which improved to 5-0 overall and 4-0 in the conference, finishes this week with three games. The Trojans hosted rival Emmaus Wednesday and welcome Pleasant Valley on Friday afternoon, both conference games. They then travel to take on Tulpehocken on Saturday afternoon. Next week, Parkland is at Freedom on Monday and at Easton Tuesday.
