LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

LHS enjoys best start

Winning breeds confidence and Liberty’s boys’ lacrosse team is feeling that through the early part of the spring.

The Hurricanes are off to the best start in program history, sitting with a 4-2 mark heading into the first week of April.

Liberty only won four games last year in total and have jumped out to a fast start with wins over Saucon Valley, Holy Redeemer, Quakertown and Bethlehem Catholic.

It’s a welcomed sight for head coach Joe Magargal, who had a feeling this year’s group would be able to produce more results.

“I think it is very important to get these wins in early,” Magargal said. “Prior years we had the toughest part of the schedule in the beginning and sometimes would go 0-6 or worse to start the year and that’s tough for young kids to handle or anyone frankly. You can see the confidence they are playing with now so early in the season because of these wins in my opinion.”

Liberty still has their work cut out for them against the lacrosse elites in the East Penn Conference, evidenced by their 17-2 loss to defending district champion Freedom last week, but nobody said they’d be title contenders in 2024.

Improvement and battling for the postseason is what the Hurricanes are striving for and Magargal knows this year can help change the direction of the program.

“It’s changing the whole mindset of the program moving it in the right direction,” he said. “We have good numbers this year and we returned almost our entire roster. So just a lot more experience and time playing with each other as a team has really helped us grow this year.”

Liberty has three games on the schedule this week against Daniel Boone, Northampton and Pleasant Valley.

Freedom (2-1) was the league favorite coming into the season, but the Pates dropped a 12-8 contest to Easton last week, giving the Rovers their first win of the season after a winless start.

The Pates will get another test this week against an EPC blue chip with Emmaus (4-1) on deck Wednesday. They close out the week against Saucon Valley on Friday.

Bethlehem Catholic (0-3) continues to struggle, as the Hawks have been outscored 45-3 in three contests. The Hawks have Nazareth and Parkland on deck this week.
