Whitehall considers zoning change

At the April 1 workshop meeting, Whitehall Township Board of Commissioners discussed a potential zoning amendment.

The amendment was requested by Abra Development. If passed, the amendment would rezone 3855 Lehigh St. and 3305 Municipal Drive as R3-A. The properties are currently zoned as R-4 and OS-1, respectively.

According to the township’s code of ordinances, R3-A is special care community residential, R-4 is medium density residential, and OS-1 is open space-residential/agricultural.

The developer also requested variances regarding maximum building height and setbacks.

In other business, commissioners expect to vote at their April 8 meeting on conditional approval of a land development plan for 3434 and 3435 N. Front St. The plan proposes an eight-unit apartment building with one handicapped parking spot at 3434 N. Front St. and an unattached parking lot with 15 spaces at the other address.

Commissioners will also vote on a $37,500 bid from Reed Structures to “dismantle and salvage” the Village Green Barn near the corner of Mauch Chunk Road and Schadt Avenue. The barn was said to be partially collapsed, posing a safety hazard for nearby residents as well as being an eyesore, it was reported.

The board next meets 7 p.m. April 8 at the township municipal building, 3219 MacArthur Road.
