LHS girls earn 3 medals

Liberty’s girls swim team secured medals in two relay events and one individual event at the District XI Class 3A Swimming Championships on March 1 and March 2 at Parkland High School.

“I was super happy with today,” said Liberty coach Reik Foust. “We wanted to medal in our relays, and that was a huge undertaking because we were not seeded in the medals. The girls relay that got fourth were seeded sixth or seventh, so we had to beat two or three teams, and they did.”

It was the 200 free relay team of Amelia Paxton, Lilah McClarin, Audrey Bloss-Ferry, and Chelsea Hearn who climbed three places with a time of 1:43.38 and actually placed third after Nazareth’s relay was disqualified.

And in the first event of the meet, McClarin, Leah Onia, Katie Bruno, and Hearn won fourth-place medals in the 200 medley relay with their time of 1:52.31.

Freedom’s Alexia Ragab, Alivia Deemer, Sofia Nabyt, and Laney Stewart had a sixth-place finish in the medley relay with a time of 2:00.05.

Liberty’s Onia captured the 100 breaststroke bronze medal with her time of 1:09.36.

“It feels amazing as a sophomore to medal at districts,” Onia said. “There’s so much good competition. I knew Kelsey McPeek would be unstoppable. It was a really, really good race. Looking at the heat sheets, everyone’s times were very close to each other, and I knew it was gonna be a good meet.”

Parkland’s McPeek was the breaststroke winner with a time of 1:03.72.

Southern Lehigh’s Gianna Cusumano came in second with a time of 1:09.17.

Said Onia, “Originally, it wasn’t a plan to medal at districts, but as the season progressed, I continued to drop time and it fell into place. My turns and my finish were much better than during the medley relay. I could have been a little quicker on my pull outs, but otherwise, it felt like a great swim.”
