Classical View: Allentown Music Club plans Albert Hofammann Scholarship concert

The Allentown Music Club will hold the “Dr. Albert Hofammann Scholarship for Young Pianists” concert, 2 p.m. April 6, Asbury United Methodist Church, 1533 Springhouse Road, Allentown. The concert is open to the public.

Auditions for the scholarship and concert begin at 5 p.m. March 9, Asbury United Methodist Church. The auditions are not open to the public.

A prize of $1,000 is to be used to continue the study of piano performance. Applicants for the Hofammann piano scholarship must be piano students in grades 9 through 12 in high schools in Lehigh and Northampton counties. Advance registration for auditions is required by March 6.

The scholarship, established by the Allentown Music Club in 2014, rewards piano performance in honor of Dr. Albert G. Hofammann III (1920 - 2020).

Hofammann was Arts Editor at The Morning Call, where he guided the Lehigh Valley arts coverage for many years and wrote about and reviewed classical music and the gallery and literary arts. He was a piano recitalist, organist, church music director, music teacher and lecturer.

Hofammann, a 1937 graduate of Allentown High School (now William Allen High School), received a BA from Muhlenberg College and an MA and PhD in English and Comparative Literature from the University of Pennsylvania.

Hofammann was a World War II veteran, serving as a United States Army CounterIntelligence Corps Special Agent in the European Theater, for which he received the Bronze Star and the French Croix de Guerre.

The Allentown Music Club, founded in 1906, affiliated with the Pennsylvania Federation of Music Clubs in 1915 and, in turn, the National Federation of Music Clubs.
