PHS wrestlers top Hornets

The Parkland High School boys wrestling team is riding some positive momentum heading into the postseason. Winners of four matches in a row heading into the regular season finale, the Trojans made it five consecutive victories, taking down rival Emmaus 39-15 last Tuesday, Feb. 6, in an Eastern Pennsylvania Conference dual at Emmaus.

The Trojans won nine of the 13 bouts, including a streak of six straight from 114 pounds through to 145 pounds.

Emilio Albanese opened the match with a 4-1 decision at 107 pounds to give the Hornets a 3-0 lead early on. But three consecutive decisions, 3-1 by Eli Russ (114), 1-0 by Blake Dergham (121) and 7-2 by Jakob Peterson (127), gave it a 9-3 advantage, and then a pin at 133 by Elias Sallit and back-to-back decisions by Leo Kern at 139 and Faisal Amodu at 145, respectively, staked their lead to 21-3.

Xayden Sallit of Emmaus earned a pin in 1:31 at 152 pounds to answer the Trojans’ run, and then Jesse Scott received a 6-2 decision at 160 pounds and Emmaus found itself trailing 21-12.

Parkland responded with a pin at 172 by Jorge Moya in 1:35, before Massimo Tranguch recorded a 6-3 decision at 189 pounds and his team trailed 27-15 with just two bouts to go, needing back-to-back pins to stay alive.

But it was the Trojans who tallied two straight pins from Gavin Edwards (215) and Michael Gavrilesku (285) and won the match in the end.

Parkland ends its season at 8-6 overall and 5-4 in conference matches, and will now turn its attention to the District 11 3A tournament on Feb. 23-24 at Liberty High School. Regionals are set for the following weekend, back at Liberty and then the PIAA 3A championships will be the next weekend in Hershey.
