Man charged in wake of shelter in place order Jan. 27

A 30-year-old male is formally charged in the wake of a shelter in place order effectively shuttering Macungie borough for approximately five hours Jan. 27.

Shane Lake faces charges of alleged simple assault, harassment, resisting arrest and evading arrest or detention on foot, according to court documents.

Macungie police filed the charges against Lake.

Lake was unable to post bail and was confined to Lehigh County Jail, according to court records.

The incident in which Lake is charged started in the late afternoon of Jan. 27 when a woman came to the Macungie police station. In a telephone interview Jan. 29, Macungie Police Department Sgt. Travis Kocher described the woman as having “obvious physical injuries.”

The woman was taken to a hospital for treatment.

As part of the police investigation, officers went to an apartment in the unit block of East Main Street where Lake was seen allegedly leaving the apartment. He saw police and retreated into the apartment before allegedly escaping to a roof through a window, dropping to the ground and fleeing.

A search perimeter was put in place and officers from Alburtis and Emmaus boroughs, Upper Macungie and Salisbury townships and troopers from Pennsylvania State Police Fogelsville joined the search effort.

A drone team also assisted in the search.

On Jan. 29, Kocher described the perimeter as moving as Lake moved, noting the suspect remained inside the perimeter throughout the pursuit.

Borough residents were told to shelter in place to avoid encountering the suspect.

The search ended around 11 p.m. when Lake was found in a water pipe emptying into a retention pond not far from Eyer Middle School, according to Kocher.

At the time of his arrest, Lake was taken into custody on a warrant for alleged burglary issued by Salisbury police.
