Walter W. Bauman Sr.

Walter W. Bauman Sr., 90, of Emmaus, died Feb. 2, 2024 in Lehigh Valley Hospital - Cedar Crest, Allentown. Born in Emmaus, he was a son of the late Warren W. and Pearl Anna Rebecca (Ohl) Bauman. He was the loving husband of Shirley M. Miller with whom he shared 22 years of marriage.

He graduated from Emmaus High School in June 1951. He proudly served with the U.S. Army Engineers from 1953 to 1955 and was stationed in Korea and Japan.

He played professional baseball with St. Louis Cardinals minor league team in Hazelhurst, Ga. in 1952 and Lynchburg, Va. in 1953. He was invited to spring training with parent team - St. Louis Cardinals in Florida in 1953. In his 1952 baseball season in Georgia, he had a record of 21 wins and six losses. He also pitched a no-hit game in 1952 season which was witnessed by several hometown friends in Emmaus.

He worked at Witwer-Jones Sporting Goods Store in Allentown for more than 20 years. He was also employed by Service Supply Wholesale Plumbing & Heating Supply in Allentown for more than 20 years and retired in 1995. He was a life member of Emmaus VFW Post 7088, member of Emmaus American Legion Post 191, Emmaus Mercantile Club and Knights of Columbus - social member. He enjoyed skiing, golfing, going to the fitness club, walking and exercising.

He is survived by his wife; children, Vanessa J. Vercusky, Lori M. Hoppes, Walter W. Jr. and his wife, Patricia; seven grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren with one on the way. He was predeceased by his first wife, Ethel (Snyder) Ringler, mother of his children; second wife, Jean (Hotchkiss); his sister, Helen (Bauman) Rutty; brother-in-law, Frank T. Rutty.

Memorial services will be held 11 a.m. Feb. 10 in Schantz Funeral Home, P.C., 250 Main St., Emmaus. Visitation will be 10 to 11 a.m.
