Dergham, Gavrilesku earn medals at BHWC

Blake Dergham and Michael Gavrilesku both earned medals at last week’s Bethlehem Holiday Wrestling Classic, leading the Trojans to 23rd place in a strong field of 34 teams for the annual event at Liberty High School.

The Trojans as a team finished 23rd overall out of 34 teams with 57 points. They finished ahead of Eastern Pennsylvania Conference member Stroudsburg and other District 11 opponents such as Southern Lehigh and Wilson Area.

Dergham placed fifth overall at 121 pounds. He opened the tournament with two straight decisive victories, a pin in 2:36 and then a 15-2 major decision. After falling via an 8-2 decision in the quarterfinal round, Dergham bounced back with two wins by decision to get to the fifth-place match where he earned a 3-1 decision over Gus Stedeford from North Allegheny.

Gavrilesku (285) began his tournament with two pins in 1:06 and 2:32, respectively. After losing his next match to Quakertown’s Calvin Lachman, Gavrilesku picked up another pin, this time over Dylan Bledsoe of Garnet Valley in 36 seconds. He advanced to the seventh-place match before falling to Spring-Ford’s Connor Hudak, 2-1.

Jorge Moya (172) won three matches at 172 pounds, including a pin, and Matthew Velez (107), Eli Russ (114), Jakob Peterson (127) and Christopher Toth (152) all recorded two wins during the tournament.

Parkland was back in East Penn Conference action with a dual match at Pocono Mountain East this past Wednesday. The Trojans host the Parkland Duals Saturday before welcoming Northampton for a dual meet next Wednesday night.
