Trojan wrestlers bounce back with win over Canes

After falling in its last Eastern Pennsylvania Conference dual match at Easton back on Dec. 13, the Parkland High School wrestling team was looking for a bounce back before the Christmas break. The Trojans did just that in their last match as they took nine of the 13 overall bouts in taking down Liberty 39-15 last Wednesday night at Parkland.

Parkland evenly distributed its victories with three decisions, three major decisions and three pins.

The Hurricanes actually won the first bout at 114 with a major decision to go on top 4-0. But the Trojans responded with three straight wins at 121, 127 and 133 as Eli Russ earned a 12-2 major decision to tie the score, Blake Dergham had a 9-2 decision to give Parkland a 7-4 lead, which it would not relinquish, and then Jakob Peterson pinned Derek Cruz in 3:30 to push the advantage to 13-4.

Liberty would win the next two bouts at 139 and 145, via major decisions, to cut its deficit to just one point at 13-12, but the Trojans then took the next four. Jibreel Fairoz and Christopher Toth tallied decisions at 152 and 160, respectively. Jorge Moya pinned Daniel Rivera in 5:24 at 172 and then Julius Reyes capped the streak with a 16-7 major decision at 189 for a 29-12 lead.

Michael Gavrilesku earned a pin in 1:13 at 285 and then Matthew Velez recorded a 12-4 major decision at 107 finish off the match in Parkland’s favor.

The Trojans will step away from conference competition and will compete in the Bethlehem Holiday Wrestling Classic at Liberty on Thursday, Dec. 28 and Friday, Dec. 29. Parkland will then have an EPC dual on the road at Pocono Mountain East next Wednesday.
