William P. Gano III

William P. Gano III, 88, of Lower Saucon Township, died Dec. 8, 2023, in his home. Born in Nazareth, he was a son of the late Thelma (Tillman) Yaindl and William P. Gano Jr. He was the husband of Mary (Thaeler) Mowrer-Gano and the late Jacquelynne (Hartman) Gano for 63 years.

He was a 1957 graduate of Lafayette College. He earned an MBA from Loyola College of Maryland.

He was in the U.S. Army and the Maryland National Guard.

He was an hourly steelworker at the former Bethlehem Steel Corporation and retired as an executive.

He was a former member of Wesley Methodist Church and a current member of Central Moravian Church, both in Bethlehem.

He was president of Charter Manufacturing, Milwaukee, Wisconsin; and president and executive board member of the Association of Iron and Steel Engineers. He was a board member of the Steel Manufacturers Association, American Iron and Steel Institute, Charter Manufacturing, Kondex and Res Manufacturing.

He founded the William Gano Marquee Scholarship at Lafayette College which benefitted young people from Nazareth. Lafayette College, in recognition of his commitment to future students, inducted him and his late wife Jacquelynne Hartman Gano into the college’s Société d’Honneur. He supported several organizations, including the YMCA, Boy Scouts, Family and Children Society, and in fundraising for the United Way campaign.

He was a member of Saucon Valley Country Club where he golfed and met weekly with the “Lunch Bunch.”

In addition to his wife, he is survived by daughter, Jocelyn Stanton and her husband David of Indian Wells, California; a son, Rhett Gano of Charlottesville, Virginia; nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

He was predeceased by a son, W. Brad Gano.
