Morgan scores 14 points in win over NDES

It was a busy week for the Salisbury girls basketball team. The Falcons had four games in seven days and finished the tiring stretch with a 1-3 mark. After an opening loss to Catasauqua (3-0, 4-1), the Falcons responded by beating Notre Dame of East Stroudsburg 37-13.

Kendra Morgan led Salisbury with 14 points in the win over Notre Dame after she led Salisbury (0-2 Colonial League, 1-3 overall) with 13 points in the season opener against Catasauqua. Morgan scored seven of her points in the first quarter as the Falcons opened a 13-0 lead after the first quarter. Desiree Nales picked up where Morgan left off as she scored seven of her nine points in the second quarter as Salisbury went up 31-2 at halftime.

Word of Morgan’s scoring ability has gotten out as teams have started to key on her with their defenses. In the last two games, Morgan has been able to manage a total of 14 points because of tougher defenses being played against her. Through the four games, Morgan is averaging 10.2 points per game and is leading Salisbury in scoring.

In a nonleague game against Tamaqua (4-1), Salisbury managed just 16 points, 11 of which came in the first quarter and seven of those came on foul shots from Morgan. Salisbury trailed 29-13 at the half and managed just three second-half points and were held scoreless over the final quarter of the game. Tamaqua’s Lauren Ligenza scored 25 points in the game, the most of any player against the Falcons this season. Catasauqua’s Hailey Jenkins scored 24 in the season opener and Northwestern’s Cara Thomas added 23 in the loss to Northwestern Lehigh (2-1, 3-1).

The Northwestern defense was more daunting than any that the Falcons have faced so far. The defending league champions downed Salisbury 60-11.

The schedule again has four games in seven days before the Falcons go into their holiday break. Salisbury plays at Palmerton (3-0, 4-0) before hosting Lehigh Valley Charter Academy, Southern Lehigh (0-2, 1-2) and Moravian Academy (1-4, 1-4) before the break.
