EHS girls top Freedom in playoffs

The Emmaus High School girls soccer team was looking for a fresh start in the district playoffs.

The Green Hornets are the three seed in the District 11 4A tournament. They took down the sixth seed, Freedom, 6-0 last Wednesday afternoon at Memorial Field.

“Getting the first win in a knockout tournament always provides a team with confidence to continue to advance,” said Emmaus head coach Sarah Oswald. “It was wonderful for our seniors to be able to play one final game in front of the home crowd.”

Six different players scored goals for Emmaus as Mya Cooper, Lizzie Bender, Kam McWhinney, Sammy Walkiewicz, Ashley Geder and Lizzie Navitsky all found the back of the net for the Green Hornets. Cooper’s goal came off of a corner kick in the ninth minute that got the scoring going for her team.

“It was a great performance overall to advance into the semifinals of district,” Oswald said. “The players executed the game plan efficiently and consistently. It certainly gives us momentum as we head into a tough matchup with Easton.”

The Hornets (15-5-1 overall) will now take on the second seed, Easton, in the semifinals. Emmaus defeated the Red Rovers 3-2 last season to reach the district final. This season, however, Easton beat the Green Hornets 2-1 back on Oct. 2.

“The energy and attitude during training sessions in the district tournament has changed,” said Oswald. “The players are determined to get back to a district final and have really bought into what is being asked of them as a group. Tonight’s opponent is no easy feat, as we lost to them in the regular season. Additionally, there is some past history with beating Easton in the Semifinals of districts last year. We will need to be organized, intense, and be able to finish opportunities at the goal.”
