LIBERTY HS NEWS Back in the swing By Finn Dougherty

Students at Liberty HS are truly adjusting back to life in the classroom, as school spirit has already run rampant throughout the first month and changes have begun setting in.

One of the biggest differences seen at Liberty this school year is the brand-new grading system. The system puts a demand and importance on things such as tests, quizzes and projects, opposed to previous things such as homework, classwork and completion grades.

Instead of said completion grades, students will now take a self-assessment test three times per quarter, per class, then be evaluated by the teacher, to determine where they stand within the class. Though the system is not fully fleshed out yet, BASD hopes to find its rhythm with it soon.

On Sept. 23 the LHS Student Government hosted the 2023 Homecoming Dance for all students. Selling out completely of the over 700 available tickets, this event was a must show for anyone at LHS.

Many students stopped by to show their support for various clubs holding fundraisers and of course to show their moves on the dance floor. You may have even been lucky enough to dance alongside the large robots in the crowd, donned by Liberty HS’ very own principal Dr. Harrison Bailey.

In sports news, the boys soccer team advances to a record of 10-2-2 after a Sept. 28 0-0 double overtime tie against Freedom HS. This qualifies the team to compete in districts, which will land them in their first postseason since 2019.

The end of September also brings back the Pink Out season for sports. The Pink Out game holds fundraisers in support of people battling breast cancer as a way for our school to give back to those fighting tough battles. This year our football and girls volleyball teams brought a high attendance and a large amount of fundraising.

The Liberty HS Theater Company (LHSTC) is up and running again this year with its fall show, “Radium Girls.” The play follows a real life story set in the 1920s of female factory workers who lost their lives due to poisonous paint they were surrounded by and ingesting constantly. Rehearsals have only just begun, but spread the word and stop by Liberty HS Nov. 16-18 to check out the highly anticipated production.

On Oct. 5 the annual Senior Sunrise was held on Liberty’s football field to celebrate the beginning of a final chapter for many students. Seniors were quoted saying it was a lovely morning that truly encapsulated their gratitude for their time at LHS.
