NWL field hockey win streak ends at five games

Northwestern Lehigh went for its sixth straight win on Tuesday but was turned away by Southern Lehigh in a 3-1 contest.

The game between the two Colonial League rivals is not a league game because they already played each other earlier in the year, but they choose to meet a second time during the regular season.

The Tigers’ goal came from junior Ella Dangello with 8:50 left in regulation. The goal came off a corner with the assist going to Haley Kerschner.

Southern Lehigh (15-0 Colonial, 15-2-0 overall) will be the top seed in the Colonial League tournament, which gets underway today. Northwestern will be the number-two seed and like Southern Lehigh, will have a bye through the quarterfinal round before playing the winner of the game between number-three Palmerton (11-3-0, 12-4-0) and number-six Moravian Academy (7-6-1, 8-7-1). The Tigers first game will be on Monday at Tiger Stadium. The Spartans have won three of the last four league championships with Northwestern winning the other.

Northwestern Lehigh is currently the top seed in Class A for districts, but that could change depending on who wins the league championship. League champions get preferential seeding and Palmerton, Wilson, and Moravian Academy are also in the A classification and will play for a shot at the league championship. Southern Lehigh and Bangor, which is also in the Colonial League playoffs, are both in the 2A classification.
