Firefighters train on motor vehicle accident scenes

PRESS PHOTO BY JIM MARSH At Western Salisbury Volunteer Fire Company's regular training session May 22, firefighters used satellite imagery to do tabletop exercises on placement of emergency equipment at a motor vehicle accident scene. Using imagery of a Cedar Crest Boulevard intersection known as a high-accident zone, near the Lehigh Valley Heath Network's Cedar Crest campus, firefighters used miniature fire company vehicles to train using different placement scenarios for responding fire company vehicles in a manner that helps provide a safer environment for accident victims, ambulance personnel, police, firefighters and other first responders. The importance of fire equipment placement at a motor vehicle accident scene becomes important when taking into account about 25% percent of the 500-plus annual WSVFC emergency call responses involve vehicle accidents. The placement of “blocker” equipment and emergency traffic cones at an accident scene is critical for the safety of all responders and the motoring public. Secondary collisions caused by driver confusion and inattention are a constant hazard at accident scenes.
