Trojans earn top seed in EPC playoffs

The Parkland High School baseball team won both of its games last week, each in the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference, to not only extend its winning streak to double figures with 10 victories in a row, but in doing so, earned the number one overall seed in this week’s EPC Tournament.

The Trojans went on the road last Monday, May 1, and defeated Northampton, 11-2, in a revenge game after the Kids gave them their first loss of the season, 10-8, back on March 21. Parkland followed that up two days later with a one-run win over rival Emmaus, 3-2, in the regular season finale at home on Wednesday.

Against the Kids, Parkland outhit them 12-9 and benefited from six errors by the Northampton defense. The score was tied 1-1 after one, but the Trojans scored two more in the second and then put the game out of reach with a five-run, top of the fifth inning.

Bo Barthol, Jaiden Wanamaker and Andrew Klotz led the lineup with two hits each, and Barthol and Wanamaker adding two RBIs a piece and Klotz scoring three runs. Will Dobil had one hit and a team-best three RBIs. Owen DeLong got the win on the mound, throwing a complete game while striking out four.

In the game with the Hornets, Emmaus got on the scoreboard first with a run in the top of the second. Parkland answered immediately with two runs in the bottom-half and then tacked on an important run in the bottom of the fourth. The Green Hornets scored a run in the fifth.

Barthol got the start on the bump and threw a complete game, allowing just an earned run, striking out six batters. Barthol and Dominic Medlar both finished with two hits, with the latter adding two RBIs. Louis Inserra also had an RBI for the Trojans.

Parkland finished the regular season with a 17-2 overall record and 14-2 mark in the conference. The Trojans are the top seed in the EPC and will take on the eighth seed in the quarterfinal round.
