NWL girls lax qualifies for district tourney

In just its fourth season, the Northwestern Lehigh girls lacrosse team has qualified for districts. The clinching came in a 19-7 win over Parkland last week. The Tigers have now won three straight after a midseason swoon that saw them drop six out of nine games.

The current three-game streak includes wins over Northampton (1-17), Moravian Academy (5-7) and Parkland (6-9). Parkland has also qualified for districts, and it is likely that Moravian Academy will as well.

It appears the Tigers will be the number-two seed in 2A lacrosse when districts get underway later this month.

Coming into the win over Parkland, seniors Ava Collins and Lexi Vennera have been battling for the team lead in points. With a slight edge in both goals and assists, Vennera has scored 64 points (48 goals, 16 assists) to Collins’ 61 points from 46 goals and 15 assists. Vennera also leads the team in ground balls and is second in draw controls with 42.

Sophomore Sydney Wright (27 points) and sisters Olivia and Claire Costa (26 points each) round out the top five in scoring for Northwestern Lehigh. Olivia Costa is a sophomore and Claire Costa is one of four seniors on the team.

In goal, senior Gabby Gober has 70 saves for Northwestern while freshman Mykaela Yanders has 67 games with the pair splitting some time in goal for the team.

After playing four straight games on the road, Northwestern (9-6) will play its three remaining regular season games in the friendly confines of Tiger Stadium against Saucon Valley (5-8-1), Moravian Academy and Southern Lehigh (11-3). The Spartans will likely be the top seed in 2A.

They also have just three games remaining and have common opponents in Saucon Valley and Moravian before the season ends with a showdown between the top two teams on Tuesday.

Three weeks ago, Southern Lehigh downed Northwestern 19-6 in the middle of the Lady Tigers tough stretch of games.

That game was played on grass, and it will be interesting to see if the home turf makes a difference in the game.

It is still possible that Northwestern could catch Southern Lehigh for the top spot, but the Spartans would have to lose all three of their remaining games and the Tigers would need wins in all three of their games.

Even then, it’s not clear whether the Lady Tigers would get the top seed since it would come down to a complicated formula based on strength of schedule.

The bottom line is that Northwestern Lehigh met its preseason goal of qualifying for the postseason for the first time in the short history of the program.
