Northwestern girls lacrosse seeks D-11 playoff spot

With two weeks remaining on the regular season schedule, the Lady Tiger girls lacrosse team is looking to lock down its first invitation to the District 11 playoffs. Their 7-6 record has the Tigers in position to get there, but a few more wins would come in handy.

Last week, the team went 2-1 with wins over 2A contender Allentown Central Catholic (3-8-1) and 3A team Northampton (1-15). The Tigers’ loss came to one of the toughest teams in the Lehigh Valley, the 14-3 Emmaus Hornets, who have not only clinched a spot in districts, but are also wrangling their way to grab the top spot.

On April 4, Lexi Vennera reached the 100-point mark for her career and less than a month later, in the win over Central Catholic she reached the 100-draw control mark for Northwestern Lehigh when she collected four draw controls in the game. Her classmate and midfield mate Claire Costa, picked up seven draw controls, eight ground balls and a goal in the 14-10 win. Sophomore Sydney Wright scored five times and seniors Vennera and Ava Collins both picked up three goals. A pair of sophomores, Olivia Costa and Cara Thomas added goals as well.

Emmaus downed the Lady Tigers 19-8, but Vennera again had a good game with five goals and an assist and Collins added two goals and Wright had one. Goalkeeper Mykaela Yanders made nine saves for Northwestern Lehigh.

This week brings games against Moravian Academy (5-5) and Parkland (6-8), both of which are on the road. The next home game is against Saucon Valley (4-7-1) on May 10.
