Parkland boys tennis wins three straight

The Parkland boys tennis program improved to 11-3 with three straight victories last week. The Trojans downed Northampton, Whitehall and East Stroudsburg South over three consecutive days.

Coach Michael Hingston’s squad was dominant in the win over the Konkrete Kids. No. 1 singles player Josh Thomas continued to show why he is one of the East Penn Conference’s better singles players by downing Pearce Foulk, 6-0, 6-0.

“He’s among the top couple of players in the league,” Hingston said. “The way he plays in warmups is the way he plays in the game. Not all players are like that.”

No. 2 singles player Lucas Lee, who Hingston has noted “has become more aggressive” in his game, pounded Dane Missemer, 6-0, 6-1. No. 3 Kevin Yao continued his development toward becoming a more complete tennis player in beating Brett Bastian, 6-0, 6-0.

The double teams really did a job for Hingston against Northampton. No. 2 doubles pairing Taehyuk Yang and Rithik Raghuraman had no trouble with Brennan Grover and Nicholas Riechel, 6-0, 6-0, while Parkland’s No. 3 team of Noah Oxfeld and Thomas Gilchrist beat Maxwil Kochan and Chace Roland, 6-2, 6-3. Oxfeld and Gilchrist continue their development as the playoffs are around the corner.

No. 4 doubles pairing Ojas Karandikar and Matt Ringold beat Connor Retlick and Reece Makary, 6-0, 6-0, while the No. 1 Parkland team - Yechan Cho and Eric Jin - played well in beating Colin Enright and Jad Samaan 6-0, 6-0.

The Trojans earned a 6-0 win over the Zephyrs with Thomas, Lee, Yao all earning singles wins, and the teams of Ringold and Raghuraman, Oxfeld and Gilchrist and Karandikar and Jin earning the wins.

Last Monday the Trojans suffered a defeat to Liberty, 2-4. The Hurricanes improved to 15-0 with the victory with Thomas and Yao earning the two Parkland wins. Thomas won an entertaining match over Roman Farhad 7-6, 6-4, while Yao won a three-set thriller over David Broczkowski, 7-5, 5-7, 7-5.

Parkland’s final scheduled regular season match is April 17 at Emmaus. The next afternoon a postponed battle with Nazareth is scheduled. The EPC championship is set for April 20 at Parkland High School, with the District 11 3A tournament starting April 24.
