Parkland boys lax bounces back from loss

The Parkland High School boys lacrosse team won its first six games of the season before suffering its first defeat on Saturday, April 8 against William Penn Charter. It was still the type of start that first-year head coach Vincent Arezzi could have hoped for.

The Trojans bounced back by winning their next three games, two nonconference and one in the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference. They defeated Moravian Academy 15-2 last Tuesday, April 11, and then beat Bethlehem Catholic 24-0 two nights later. This past Tuesday, Parkland also shutout Saucon Valley 20-0 on senior night.

Against the Lions, the Trojans jumped out to a large lead early by scoring seven of the first eight goals in the first quarter and held a 9-2 advantage at halftime. They outscored Moravian Academy 6-0 in the final two quarters for the win.

Chase Kusko led the attack with four goals and three assists, while Parker Kusko and Drew Filipovits each finished with two goals and at least one assist. Victor Pagan, James Scott, Anthony Schultz, Jake Parker, Adam Matulevicius, Blake Finnegan and Danny Tapia all had a goal each. Chris Andersen made nine saves in net.

The game with the Golden Hawks was decided following the opening quarter as Parkland found the back of the net 12 times in that frame, unanswered. The Trojans were up 15-0 at halftime and 18-0 after three.

Chase Kusko once again led the way in scoring with four goals and an assist. Parker Kusko and Parker both had hat tricks, with the latter adding three assists, and Filipovits, Tapia, John Gerancher and Mazz Afif all recorded two goals. Schultz, Pagan, Jake Beidelman, Talan Oswald, Matt Kelley and Matulevicius rounded out the scoring. Matulevicius also made one save in net.

Against the Panthers, Parkland raced out ahead and scored eight goals in the first quarter and seven more in the second to take a 15-0 lead at halftime and never looked back.

Chase Kusko notched four goals and six assists and Parker had four goals and two assists. Filipovits, Schultz, Beidelman and Finnegan all had multi-goal games. Andersen finished with two saves.

Parkland is currently 8-1 overall and 5-0 in the EPC. The Trojans play at Northampton in EPC action Thursday before traveling to play Wilson West Lawn in nonconference action on Saturday morning.
