LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

Roughs will be busy early on

For the Catasauqua baseball team this spring, it continues to be a waiting game.

The Rough Riders began the season last Wednesday against Southern Lehigh with some spots apparently secure, while others were yet to be totally decided.

More succinctly, it is a handful of players who already can fill multiple roles for the Roughies, and the others who will need to develop.

In their only scrimmage against Dieruff before their season opener, veteran head coach Steve Bradley was able to gather plenty of positives. The Roughies pulled out an 11-5 victory.

“We made some errors that led to their five runs,” said Bradley. “A couple of dropped balls hurt us.

“But we hit the ball well, and we got some good pitching. We just need our pitchers to throw strikes.”

Junior Hunter Reitz, who will be a mainstay in the lineup and in center field, injured his shoulder sliding into a base. However, Bradley doesn’t expect him to miss any time.

Fellow junior John Pushkar also figures to play a key role this spring. Against Dieruff, Pushkar played third base, caught, and pitched a few innings.

“He looks good,” said Bradley of Pushkar. “He will be in a few roles for us. He has thrown the ball well.”

Senior Bryann Rivera, who logged significant innings last year, will be at the top of the staff.

“Bryann did a nice job against Dieruff,” added Bradley. “He will help us.”

Sophomore Matt Fotta, who is expected to have a big bat at first base, has continued to be slowed with an ankle injury.

“He just can’t run well at this point,” said Bradley. “He is getting better. He can play a big role in our lineup.”

Junior Ray Estecumber has played third base and catcher. He also will be on the Roughies’ arms this season.

“He does a lot of things well,” noted Bradley. “I feel he can help us as a pitcher.”

Bradley also has been impressed with freshman Reece Lopez and newcomer junior Dave Carl, a transfer from Hamburg.

“Lopez has been playing a good second base for us,” said Bradley. “He could also see some time on the mound.

“Carl can help us in the outfield and also as a DH or pitcher. He has been pretty accurate throwing the ball for us.”

The Roughies will sort out their lineup early, as they have six games in their first nine days.

“We have a packed schedule to start the season,” said Bradley. “We’ll have a good idea of where we are for the rest of the season.”
