‘Chicago’ on NAHS stage March 23-26

The Roaring Twenties jazzes up the stage with “Chicago - the Teen Edition,” set for 7 p.m. March 23, 24 and 25 and 2 p.m. March 26 at Northampton Area High School, 1619 Laubach Ave.

Director Christine Marto is assisted by choreographer Gianna Neal, vocal director Hannah Milagio, orchestra director Isabella Beedle, set design adviser/technical director Anthony Beleno and costume designer Carolyn Peters.

Celebrity lawyer Billy Flynn defends Velma Kelly, a vaudevillian who allegedly shot her husband and sister. At the same time, he represents chorus girl Roxie Hart, who allegedly murders a nightclub regular. The clients vie for acquittals and the limelight in the jazzy satire loosely based on real events.

With music by John Kander, lyrics by Fred Ebb and book by Ebb and Bob Fosse, “Chicago” is based on a 1926 play by Maurine Dallas Watkins, a journalist covering the courthouse beat for the Chicago Tribune. The musical premiered on Broadway in 1975, receiving 11 Tony Award nominations.

The 1996 Broadway revival received nine Tony nominations and won seven Tony Awards. The 2002 film adaptation received a Best Picture Oscar.

Notable songs include “All That Jazz,” “Funny Honey,” “Razzle Dazzle,” “Mr. Cellophane” and “Nowadays.”
