Emmaus excels at CC Classic

Swimmers from the Lehigh Valley and beyond took part in the Cedar Crest Classic over the weekend and the Hornets left the pool with the top spot among combined scores from 10 different schools.

The Emmaus boys team took the top spot with 529 points, beating Nazareth at 460. Among girls teams, Emmaus finished fourth with 342 points behind Parkland (421), Exeter (373) and Muhlenberg (352).

Logan Shriver took the win in the boys 100-yard breaststroke and finished fourth in the 100-yard freestyle. Junior Logan Hartman was third in the breaststroke, finishing two spots behind Shriver. Andrew Taylor finished second in the 100-yard butterfly and fourth in the 100-yard backstroke, while Ryan DeJohn took second in the 200-yard individual medley.

Emmaus’ top event was the boys 200-yard freestyle where four swimmers finished among the top eight. Connor Burnand placed third with Ethan Ferris coming in one spot behind him. John Niggel placed sixth and Garrett Longbons came in eighth. Longbons also had a third-place finish in the 500-yard freestyle.

Senior Hailey Reinhard took second in the 200-yard individual medley and fourth in the 100-yard breaststroke as the only girls swimmer to finish in the top five in two individual events.

Freshman Emelia Pechulis was fourth in the 50-yard freestyle, just ahead of teammate Gloria Klees.

In relays, the boys had three teams finish in the top three spots.

The 400-yard freestyle team of Taylor, DeJohn, Reppert, and Messenlehner were the top finishers in that event, while Taylor, Shriver, DeJohn, and Reppert made up the 200-yard medley team that took second. In the 200-yard freestyle event, Emmaus placed third with a team of Shriver, Reppert, Messenlehner, and Niggel.

Reinhard and Pechulis teamed with Izzy Sparaco and Mia Baldwin for a fourth-place finish in the 200-yard medley relay.

The postseason has plenty of action on the schedule over the next few weeks.

The EPC Diving Championships will be held Saturday at Parkland High School with the district diving championship coming up Feb. 25 at Emmaus. The District 11 Last Chance Meet, which gives swimmers one final opportunity to post qualifying times for districts, will be held at Emmaus on the 18th.
