Boys anxious to keep things rolling

After his team finished with an overall 4-18 record this year, Catasauqua head coach Eric Snyder is anxious for the summer and the thought of next season.

“Our kids worked hard all season,” he recalled. “We just had problems scoring. We had a lot of guys out there in big roles for the first time.

“But we have a promising group coming back next year.”

The Roughies will lose Bryann Rivera, Cedric Bright, Joe Fischl, and Irving Torres to graduation, and all of them improved their game this season. Torres received Honorable Mention Colonial League honors.

“Torres was a shot-blocking machine,” noted Snyder. “He must have blocked three shots a game, and most were jump shots. For him, it was about timing and he had those long arms. He also was more aggressive offensively.

“Rivera matured and improved his game. He became more of a playmaker than a shooter. Bright was a leader for us all season. Fischl has a very positive presence and he helped many of the players.

“It was a good senior class, and they did whatever we asked of them.”

Snyder is excited about the possibilities from freshmen Hamaad Jenkins and Frankie Pujols. Fellow freshman Reece Lopez and junior John Pushkar also can make an impact. Pujols played in only five games due to a broken toe. He had 24 points against Salisbury down the stretch.

“We see their potential and what they can possibly do,” stressed Snyder. “Pujols knows the game well, and he can be a consistent 20-point scorer. He can do a lot of things on the floor.

Jenkins is very aggressive and strong. He knows he needs to work on his jump shot.

“Lopez had a nice finish to his season, and Pushkar is a very hard worker who also has improved.”

Snyder indicated the team will play in the summer league at Whitehall, and he has entertained the thought of playing in two tournaments. The team likely will play in the North Catty League as well.

He believes time is on his side.

“We had a lot of freshmen,” added Snyder. “They learned as the season went on, and they’re a good group of kids. We’re looking forward to seeing if they can take the next step.”
