PHS girls split two games

The Parkland High School girls basketball team faced a difficult patch last week, dropping two of its three games, all in the Eastern Pennsylvania Conference.

After falling to Central Catholic on the road last Tuesday night, the Trojans remained on the road for their next game and bounced back to beat Allen Friday night for the second time in as many months this season. But then just as what happened two weeks prior in the first game between the two teams, Parkland suffered a close loss in the end to Bethlehem Catholic this past Saturday.

Against the Canaries, the Trojans made quick work and were never really threatened past the first quarter in winning the game 63-26.

It was a little bit tougher against the Golden Hawks. After a first quarter that saw Becahi score two more points than Parkland to lead 12-10, the Trojans switched the script and outscored the Golden Hawks by two to tie the score at 27-27 at halftime. Talia Zurinskas helped out matters that quarter by scoring nine of her game-high 20 points in that eight-minute span.

Becahi came out of the locker room with just a little more energy and made a 10-6 run in the third quarter to go up by four heading into the final frame. The Trojans pulled to within just a basket, but could not make it all the way back and lost 50-48. It was the second time the two teams had a one-score game as the Golden Hawks won the opener 35-34 on January 17.

Delaney Chilcote and Maddi Siggins both finished with eight points for the Trojans. Alexis Brader tallied seven points and Aneri McGalla rounded out the scoring with five points.

Parkland is 13-6 overall and 11-2 in the EPC, tied with the Vikettes for third place in the conference behind Pocono Mountain West and Easton. The Trojans hosted Northampton this past Tuesday night before a road game at Emmaus on Thursday. The regular season finale is scheduled for Monday at Whitehall.
