LEHIGH VALLEY WEATHER

BC back on top with D-11 crown

It was another day in the office for Bethlehem Catholic at the District 11 3A team tournament and those work days usually entail winning.

The Hawks did that in Saturday’s championship against Nazareth, climbing out of a 19-point hole to come back and win 33-25 for their third straight district crown.

Becahi (14-0) has won seven of the last nine tournament titles and seeing Nazareth (14-2) in the final is what everyone expected.

Both teams are ranked 1-2 respectively in the state and head coach Jeff Karam knew it was going to be a battle again seeing their district rivals.

“They’re a quality program and they’ve beaten us more than any team in the area,” said Karam. “They give us a battle every time and we’ve been fortunate to come out on top. I’m sure they’re looking for ways to make up those eight points if we see them again [at states].”

Nazareth won the first four bouts to build their 19-0 lead when the match started at 172 where Dominic Wheatley knocked off Luke Thomas 5-4. The Blue Eagles picked up two falls and a major decision in the next three bouts to build their lead before Becahi closed out the match winning seven of the final nine bouts.

Keanu Dillard (107) and Nate Desmond (114) got the Hawks rolling back with a pair of falls to make it 19-12 before Nazareth won the next two matches by decision for a 25-12 advantage.

From there the Hawks won the final five matches, as Jake Dailey’s (152) pin over Alex DiMartino in 23 seconds put Becahi up for the first time on the night at 29-25. Andrew Harmon (160) finished the night off with a 9-1 major decision over Brayden Zuercher.

The expectation for many is that both teams will see each other on Saturday at 1 p.m. when the PIAA 3A championship takes place at Hershey’s Giant Center.

The Hawks open the tournament Thursday against Council Rock South and could face a tough battle in the quarters against District 7 runner-up Waynesburg. District 1 champion Pennridge or District 6 champion Central Mountain would be sitting there in the semifinals to see Becahi if they get there.

“We’re geared where it’s one match a time,” said Karam of the focus this week. “We got four matches to go and we’re not going to overlook anybody. Waynesburg has been ranked in the top three most of the season and they are tough. Pennridge and Central Mountain are both tough teams too. Nazareth has a tough bracket as well. We can only focus on what’s ahead of us and right now it’s all about our first match.”

A Becahi-Nazareth state final is what everyone is hoping for, as it would mark the third time both programs would meet for the state championship. The Blue Eagles won by criteria in 2017 and Becahi took last year’s matchup 34-22 to win their fourth PIAA 3A championship and eighth overall [four in 2A].

“Just have to make sure we’re ready,” said Karam if both teams were to see each other again this weekend. “My goal is to make that gap more than eight points. Last year, we wrestled them three times and each time the margin got wider. I’m sure they’re thinking of ways to narrow that gap and we got to think of ways to make it bigger too.”
