School board approves new appointments, daily substitutes

At the Jan. 23 Whitehall-Coplay School Board meeting, new appointments were approved, including Jacob Hausman, salaried building substitute teacher at Zephyr Elementary School, at $53,718, prorated, effective Jan. 4; Catherine Hess, special education teacher at Steckel Elementary School, at $68,041, prorated; Logan Kendy, Whitehall High School counselor, at $68,041, prorated; Andy Marino, WHS salaried building substitute teacher, at $57,539, prorated, effective Jan. 24; Amy Blose, WHS head cook, at $24.33 per hour, effective Jan. 24; Donna Yankanich, part-time 10-month transportation secretary, at $19.23 per hour; Heather Thomas, Gockley Elementary School reading/literacy paraprofessional, at $20.42 per hour; Denise Ritter, principal’s secretary at Zephyr Elementary, at a prorated salary of $42,715; and Christian Malone, computer technician/help desk at WHS, at a prorated salary of $44,000, effective Jan. 24.

Approved day-to-day substitutes include Paige Sommers, as of Dec. 8, 2022; Mikayla McGarr, as of Dec. 9, 2022; Gabriella Olivieri, as of Dec. 8, 2022; Kyleigh Grim, as of Dec. 14, 2022; Norah Lando, effective Jan. 24; Martin Koeller, effective Jan. 24; Katherine Sywensky, effective Jan. 24; Aaron Kuhlman, effective Dec. 20, 2022; and Mary McCauley, effective Aug. 29, 2022. Day-to-day substitutes receive a daily pay rate as per the preapproved 2022-23 substitute rates.

Spring 2023 after-school program teachers at Zephyr, approved for the STEM after-school program, include Kristy George; Danielle Hacker, special education; David Lengyel; Michele Muenker, sub; Beth Deichmeister, sub; and Diane Eraifeg, nurse. At Whitehall-Coplay Middle School, teachers include Jamie Biro; Elaine Kloss, special education; Deborah Luff; Cathy Wisser, nurse/1:1 support for a student; and Man Ching Yeung, 1:1 paraprofessional for a student. At WHS, teachers include Hailey Arnold; Rachel Burkhart; Lucille Cucco; Michael Recker, special education; and Kathlyn Macalintal, sub.

The salaries for the after-school program teachers are paid for from the ESSER III grant, 7% set aside ASP.

New coach appointments include Andy Marino, full-time football head coach, with the compensation of $9,941.58, and Brandon Hampton, full-time cross-country head coach, at $3,313.86.

Approved teacher induction participants include Rebecca Viglianti, mentor to Ieasha Nelson, at $715; Lori Galucy, mentor to Allison Slate, at $650; Julie Pittas, mentor to Joshua Youwakim, at $715; Chad Stefanyak, mentor to Jayson Spangler, at $715; Michael Quickel, mentor to Noah Borgman, at $715; and Michelle Muenker, mentor to Sarah Shimer, at $715.

Revisions from the August 2022 board agenda include approved inductees who resigned and approved replacement inductees with no change to mentor compensation. Changes include Lori Galucy, mentor to Laura Baranek, who was replaced by Nicole Layton; Jennifer Kupstas, mentor to Grace Huang, who was replaced by Lea Rossanese; Lisa Barr, inductee who was replaced by Natalie Schlofer; and Jennifer Stancombe, inductee who was replaced by Susan DiGiacomo.
