Harold Frey Memorial Bench Fund established

Alburtis Borough Council met Jan. 11 for its first meeting of the year. As a reminder, all meetings are open to the public and occur on the second and last Wednesday of each month. The meetings typically start 7 p.m. and are held at 260 Franklin St. in Alburtis.

New full-time Alburtis Police Officer Ethan Hugg arrived before the meeting to officially shake hands and introduce himself to the members of the council. He was approved in a previous meeting.

The meeting began without public comment or a mayoral report.

The meeting minutes of Dec. 28, 2022, were approved.

The bills for payment were approved. The amount totaled $53,458.03. This dates to the previous meeting.

The treasurer’s report, engineer’s report and the Macungie Ambulance report were all approved without discussion.

In administration, four resolutions involving reappointments were approved.

Resolution No. 2023-1 reappointed members to the zoning hearing board. These members include June Ellen Claydon, Richard Kulbaba and Thomas Miller.

Resolution No. 2023-2 reappointed Stephen Nemeth to the park and recreation committee.

Resolution No. 2023-3 reappointed Scott Stonebeck to the civil service commission.

Resolution No. 2023-4 reappointed members to the Alburtis Planning Commission. The members are Robyn Petrie and Michael Wambaugh.

Following these resolutions, council had a discussion on the terms and guidelines of the newly established special events committee. Committee Chair Hector Moss and council are working to ensure all is structured correctly by the borough. However, nothing was approved during the meeting.

The Harold Frey Memorial Bench Fund was established by council. “He meant a lot to the borough,” Borough Manager Sharon Trexler said. Donations are welcome. With enough money, the borough could install more than one bench.

An update was then provided on the shed for the local sewer station. Council approved the purchase of a premade shed for under $1,500. This will be used to store equipment.

The last item discussed was correspondence from the Lehigh Valley Regional Homeless Advisory Board. They are requesting a census of the homeless in the area. Trexler could not think of anyone in the borough that would identify as homeless, though more research needs to be done.

The meeting was then adjourned. The next borough meeting will take place 7 p.m. Jan. 25.
