SHS girls get closer to first win of season

While the Lady Falcons have opened the season with five straight losses, there are signs that the young team is developing and starting to come together. After scoring just 52 points in their first three games of the season, Salisbury (0-5 overall, 0-4 Colonial League) has scored 71 points in its last two games. The Falcons’ defense has also stepped up to limit Tamaqua and Southern Lehigh to 91 points, an improvement over the 154 points they allowed in their first three games.

The offensive resurgence has been led by senior Hannah Kamp and junior Desiree Nales. In the last two games, Kamp has averaged 12 points per game, while Nales has averaged 12.5 points per game. Kamp led the team with 15 points in a 42-33 nonconference loss at Tamaqua (2-5, 1-3), while Nales took the lead when she dropped in 15 against Southern Lehigh (2-5, 2-2) in a 49-38 loss.

Head coach Paul Ziegenfus has noted that his players do not have a lot of varsity experience and have not played together as much as some teams have. He predicted that as the season went on, there would be improvement both by individual players and as a team.

Salisbury was also given a difficult stretch of games to open the season, having to face Northwestern Lehigh (7-1, 4-1) and Palmerton (6-0, 5-0), the two teams that have battled for the league championship over the past few seasons. The schedule has moved into a slightly different phase now and has given the players a chance to regroup after the early losses.

One area that has struggled has been shooting from the foul line with Salisbury hitting on 16 of 39 (41%) through their first five games. While the overall offensive production has picked up in the last two games, the team has shot just 25% (4-for-16) from the free-throw line in the two losses.

The Falcons will host Saucon Valley on the Dec. 27 and then have time off until after New Year’s when they return against Moravian Academy.
