Hockey off to hot start

The Lehigh Valley Scholastic Hockey League commenced its season on Oct. 17 at Bethlehem’s Municipal Ice Rink where Southern Lehigh faced Bethlehem and Northampton took on Nazareth.

The league includes seven varsity teams, six junior varsity teams, six middle school teams, and five youth teams.

Bethlehem, coached by John Snyder and E.J. Powers, is currently in first place with a record of 4-0-1.

Their roster includes players from Freedom, Liberty, and Moravian Academy: Patrick Michael, Chris Fanning, Caden Dudeck, Thomas Piripavel, Nick Moniz, Anthony Michael, Eden Bender, Ryan Hathaway, Donovan Richards, Landon McRae, Brady Roche, Stephen Gargiulo, Leo Kraszewski, Zander Frey, Nolan Schleppy, Tyler Bertelsen, and Dominic Natosi.

Hathaway leads the team in goals with eight, and Bertelsen leads in assists with 10.

Bender, the team’s goalie, has a save percentage of .809.

After tying Southern Lehigh, 6-6, in the season opener, Bethlehem went on to defeat Phillipsburg, 8-4, Nazareth, 8-4, Phillipsburg again, 12-3, and Parkland, 5-1.

Bethlehem’s next match is scheduled for this Wednesday when they will face Northampton at 8:45 p.m. at Muni.
