Backup cameras OK’d for trucks

Special to The Press

Accepting the advice of Dr. Anthony Naradko, director of Safety and Security, the Parkland School Board approved the purchase, at the Sept. 29 meeting, of 28 back-up camera systems from Pro-Vision at a cost of $40,740 for district trucks.

Front facing dash cameras for the district’s snow and work trucks will be included.

At the Sept. 12 buildings and grounds committee meeting, Naradko reported a workplace safety hazard exists due to the size of the vehicles and blind spots which make it difficult for the operator to see what is behind while backing up.

The cameras will have a recording capability for reference, if there is an accident.

District mechanics will install the cameras and perform routine maintenance on them.

In another matter, Reva Gandhi was introduced as the new student representative on the board.

She gave her presentation from a virtual location in New York City where she was attending a science event.

Gandhi is a student representative on the PA State Board of Education, the National Student Board Members Association, and Students for Education in Pennsylvania.

At Parkland, Gandhi is on the debate team, Mock Trial and the Political Science Club.

Looking ahead to spring, the board approved overnight field trips for district musical ensembles.

The high school orchestra with 90 students will travel to New York City March 31-April 1, 2023.

The chorale, Vera Voce, jazz band and strolling strings with a total of 140 participants will go to Washington, D.C., April 28-30, 2023.

Moving on to another topic, the board authorized an agreement for rental of the PPL Center for graduation on June 6, 2023.

Superintendent Dr. Mark Madson reported the National School Breakfast program, started on Oct. 1, will provide free breakfast for all students.
