Parkland girls tennis stays perfect through nine matches

The Parkland girls tennis program is right where it normally is when the regular season is nearing its conclusion - at the top.

Head coach Michael Hingston’s team went to 9-0 after defeating Pleasant Valley 5-2 last Friday afternoon. In addition to perfection, some of those wins have come over top programs, such as Southern Lehigh and Easton.

“Easton is a really, really good young team,” Hingston said. “Southern Lehigh is always good.”

The Trojans were awesome in their 6-1 victory at Stroudsburg on Sept. 12. Parkland’s No. 1 Lexie Warsing defeated Katie Hosko with no trouble, 6-0, 6-0.

“Lexie has played a lot of competitive tennis,” Hingston said. “She has no weaknesses.”

No. 2 Leah Zolotarev again showcased her all-around game and desire to excel in beating the Mountaineers’ Lana Marsh, 6-1, 6-2. Like her teammates No. 3 Gigi Leonzi dismissed Alison Willis easily, 6-1, 6-3.

Parkland’s doubles play all season has been superb. Against Stroudsburg, No. 2 Anshika Gupta and Sophia Petrocelli used court balance and teamwork to dismiss Jaina Nortey and Jelena Nortey, 6-1, 6-3. No. 4 Kiera Miles and Ali Silman served and volleyed to a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Juliana Vo and Maddie Noonan.

“They’re two 10th graders who have worked really hard on their games and they continue to improve,” Hingston said.

The alternate or No.1 doubles team of Moriah Thomas and Isabel Mattson edged Stroudsburg’s Hannah Helm and Shelbi Calligari, 8-6.

Parkland ends their regular season with a Sept. 27 match up against Emmaus.
